Treatment of Genital Warts By Applying Creams

             Genital warts are sexually transmitted diseases that refer to a wart-like growth over the genitals. This skin disease is caused Human Papilloma Virus or HPV virus that is responsible for the growth of warts on human genitals.

             There are several treatments for the growth of genital warts, the most common of all being imiquimod or podophyllotoxin as they very effective and simple to apply. Few other treatments like burning or freezing with acid or the laser treatment can also be used according to the size and type of wart.

             Podophyllotoxin is an extract from a plant that is available in the form of a liquid or cream. This generally has to be applied for around 3 days, twice daily after a gap of 4 days. The process has to be continued for 4-5 weeks. It is better to use cream as it is easy to apply. However, if you are a pregnant mother, make sure you avoid the use of Podophyllotoxin as it can lead to further complication.

             On the other hand is Imiquimod cream that can be suggested if podophyllotoxin fails to cure your genital warts. This is applied before going to sleep thrice a week, so that it remains over the skin for around 8 hours. The treatment for women generally takes 8 weeks, for men it can range from 12-16 weeks as well. Soreness, itching, and redness are its common side effects.

             During the treatment, it is best advised to keep the skin area clean and dry so as to safeguard from other skin disease. Make sure you take full course of medication so as to recover from genital warts. Taking the full course of treatment helps in reducing the chances of persistence infection of Human Papilloma Virus that results in genital warts.
